US Geological Survey

Most people have heard of the U S Geological survey or USGS but do not really know what it is or what they do. The US Geological survey is involved with the scientific areas of geology, biology, geography, and water with respect to identifying the natural hazards that threaten our natural resources.

In short the US Geological survey looks at all the relevant data concerning those natural hazards that affect our environment and makes recommendations on how we can save our natural resources. The US Geological survey is actually made up of many people who look at the factors that affect their area of expertise and take that information and combine with other reports to establish a pattern and make recommendations so as to avoid future problems.

As mentioned the US Geological survey is divided into four basic areas: geology, biology, geography and water. The geological area takes a look at our natural resources such as energy and minerals as well as trying to find our more about earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and other geological natural disasters. The geological area also does geological mapping, earth surface dynamics and much more.

The biological area of the US Geological survey takes a look at our biological resources such as fish and game as too how well they are holding up to not only natural disasters but also man made ones as well. Once a study of the biological resources is done then there is a report issued on how to better help those geological resources.

The US Geological survey also monitors the changes in the geography of the United States using well placed sensors. These sensors can tell the US Geological survey if there has been any small or big change in the configuration of the landscape due to any natural disasters. This helps determine if there will be an affect on the biology of the area.

The final thing the US Geological survey looks at is the way that our water resources are being handled. The US Geological survey will look at water quality of a region and determine why there is a change in the water and make recommendations for improvement if there need to be any.

The US Geological survey is involved in all areas of our environment in order to insure that our natural resources are cared for so they are there for future generations to enjoy.
